The volatile cocktail of conditions forced authorities in New South Wales to issue "catastrophic" fire warnings and impose a total fire ban across most of the State.
Southern Australia has been hit by record heatwaves in recent weeks, prompting the first "catastrophic" fire warnings -- a new category introduced after February's disastrous Black Saturday wildfires, which left 173 dead.
But this was the first time the South had to fire warning shots because the patrol boat kept intruding despite five warning signals.
