a strip of open land in forest or prairie, to arrest the advance of a fire

firebreak [′fīr‚brāk]
(forestry)
A cleared area of land intended to check the spread of forest or prairie fire.
(mining engineering)
A strip across an area in which either no combustible material is employed or in which, if timber supports are used, sand is filled and packed tightly around them.
