Born Mar. 16, 1857, in Sheffield; died Feb. 19, 1936, in Oxford. English historian who specialized in the history of 17th-century England.

Firth was a professor at Oxford University from 1904 to 1925. He served as president of the Royal Historical Society from 1913 to 1917 and as president of the Historical Association from 1906 to 1910 and from 1918 to 1920. A student and disciple of S. R. Gardiner, Firth studied the makeup and functioning of Parliament and the history of the parliamentary army and navy during the English Civil War of the 17th century. Firth viewed the basic conflict of the war as a collision of religious ideas.
