(civil engineering)
Contrivance that carries water around a dam through a series of stepped baffles or boxes and thus facilitates the migration of fish. Also known as fishway.

The fish pass works by slowing the flow of water through a special concrete channel to a speed which brown trout can swim upstream against.
The Gazette can reveal that not a single one of the 89 Tees fish (75 salmon and 14 sea trout) that were electronically tagged managed to get through the fish pass at the barrage - though four entered it.
