Fitch, Val L. (Logsdon) (1923–  ) physicist; born in Merriman, Nebr. He first utilized his knowledge of theoretical physics with the Manhattan Project (1943–46), then taught at Columbia University (1953–54) before joining Princeton (1954). For their 1963 studies on the behavior of the kaon, an unstable subatomic particle, Fitch and colleague J. W. Cronin were awarded the 1980 Nobel Prize in physics.
