On northeastern Atlantic coast of FL, north of Daytona Beach; organized Apr 28, 1917 from Saint Johns and Volusia counties. Name Origin: For Henry Morrison Flagler (1830-1913), founder of the Florida East Coast Railroad (1886) and a leader in developing Florida's east coast as a resort area.

Area (sq mi): 570.76 (land 485.00; water 85.77). Pop per sq mi: 157.50.
Pop 2005: 76,410. State rank: 35. Pop change: 2000-20005 53.30%; 1990-2000 73.60%. Pop 2000: 49,832 (White 83.60%; Black or African American 8.80%; Hispanic or Latino 5.10%; Asian 1.20%; Other 2.80%). Foreign born: 9.90%. Median age: 50.40.
Income 2000: per capita $21,879; median household $40,214; Pop below poverty level: 8.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,610-$23,929.
