flash file system
An operating system component that reads and writes a flash-based, solid state drive directly. Most operating systems use a flash translation layer (FTL) that allows them to treat a flash drive no differently than a hard disk drive. See FTL and flash memory.

long-time maker of flash file systems known for fast performance and solid reliability, has announced it will release a Linux version of its flash file system platform in February.
Intel unveiled three products: Sibley, its NOR multi-level cell (MLC) flash memory device manufactured on Intel's 90 nanometer technology; Naubinway, a next generation Intel Flash Data Integrator (FDI) flash file system designed for multimedia phones; and Sixmile, a new low-cost flash product family designed specifically for the embedded market segment.
Encirq 3e for the HC(S)12 also comes with source code for a sample flash file system that provides for addressing the on-chip or off-board Flash memory.
