Flask

(in the foundry industry), a device for containing the molding sand during packing (that is, for the production of casting molds) and during filling of the mold with molten metal. The simplest flask for a single-use mold is a rigid frame that usually consists of two halves, the cope and drag, which are positioned and fastened together during the mold assembly before pouring. Flasks for shell molding and for casting by the lost-wax method consist of boxes with bottoms. Flasks are made from steel or cast iron by casting, welding, or combined methods (welding of separate cast parts).
