Flavitskii, Konstantin Dmitrievich
Born Sept. 13 (25), 1830, in Moscow; died Sept. 3 (15), 1866, in St. Petersburg. Russian historical painter; representative of the academic style. In 1855, Flavitskii graduated from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, where he studied under F. A. Bruni. The influence of K. P. Briullov can be seen in his Christian Martyrs in the Colosseum (1862; Russian Museum, Leningrad). His painting Princess Tarakanova (1864; Tret’iakov Gallery, Moscow), which displays elements of realism, was interpreted by the democratic segment of Russian society as a denunciation of the despotism and brutality of tsarism.
