Fleming, Richard H. (Howell) (1909–89) oceanographer; born in Victoria, Canada. He came to the U.S.A. to teach and perform research at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (1931–46). He served the Hydrographic Office of the Navy (1946–50), then became a professor at the University of Washington (1950–80).
