Florida, Straits of 

a passage between the Florida peninsula and the islands of Cuba and the Bahamas, connecting the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. The straits are 570 km long, with a minimum width of 80 km. Depths reach 1,637 m in the west and 512 m in the north. The chief ports are Havana, in Cuba, and Miami, in the USA.
