Florida, Straits of, passage, c.90 mi (145 km) wide, between the Florida Keys in the north and Cuba in the south. It connects the Gulf of Mexico with the Atlantic Ocean.

Florida, Straits of

a passage between the Florida peninsula and the islands of Cuba and the Bahamas, connecting the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. The straits are 570 km long, with a minimum width of 80 km. Depths reach 1,637 m in the west and 512 m in the north. The chief ports are Havana, in Cuba, and Miami, in the USA.
