Floris, Frans (fräns flō`rĭs), c.1517–70, Flemish painter, originally named Frans de Vriendt; son of an Antwerp stonecutter. He studied in Liège and Rome. Returning to Antwerp in 1540, he opened a large school and enjoyed the patronage of William of Orange and of many Flemish and Spanish notables. Floris exemplifies the overpowering influence of Italian mannerists on many Flemish painters of his period. Characteristic are his Last Judgment (Brussels), Adoration of the Shepherds (Dresden), and Fall of the Rebellious Angels (Antwerp). In addition to such ambitious figure compositions, Floris produced several excellent portraits and etchings. How to thank TFD for its existence?
