In north-central IA, northwest of Waterloo; established Jan 15, 1851 from Chickasaw County. Name Origin: For Sgt. Charles Floyd (?-1804), a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition (1803-6). He is buried on the banks of the Missouri River; his is the first recorded death and burial of a white man in IA. Some claim for William Floyd (1734-1821), a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

John Floyd (1783-1837), VA jurist, U.S. congressman from VA (1817-29), and governor (1830-34). Others claim Col. Davis Floyd, an associate of Aaron Burr and an important member of the IN General Assembly.
