fluorescent lampType of electric discharge lamp consisting of a glass tube filled with a mixture of argon and mercury vapor. A current of electricity causes the vapor to produce ultraviolet radiation that, in turn, excites a phosphor coating on the inside of the tube, causing it to fluoresce, or reradiate the energy as visible light. Fluorescent lamps are cooler and more efficient than incandescent lamps. They are commonly installed with diffusers as part of a suspended ceiling system. See also fluorescence. fluorescent lamp 1. a type of lamp in which an electrical gas discharge is maintained in a tube with a thin layer of phosphor on its inside surface. The gas, which is often mercury vapour, emits ultraviolet radiation causing the phosphor to fluoresce 2. a type of lamp in which an electrical discharge is maintained in a tube containing a gas such as neon, mercury vapour, or sodium vapour at low pressure. | PALMDALE - Batteries, cell phones, fluorescent light tubes and other waste that contains mercury and other toxic substances can't be thrown into the trash as of Thursday. On the one hand, "the physical fluorescent light tube has never dissolved or disappeared by entering the physical field of its own light. On February 9, the Universal Waste Ban takes effect statewide, requiring residents and small businesses to dispose of "universal waste" such as batteries, old cell phones and fluorescent light tubes at designated facilities and collection sites. |
