Folketing (fôl`kətĭng), national parliament of Denmark. Formerly the lower house of the bicameral Rigsdag, it became the sole parliamentary body in 1953. It shares legislative power with the monarch, who can dissolve the body but cannot assume major international obligations without its consent. It is elected by universal suffrage, and its term is four years. Ministers can vote in the Folketing only if they are members.
Folketing 

the name of the unicameral parliament of Denmark. Elections for the Folketing are held every four years; citizens more than 20 years of age are eligible to vote. The Folketing is composed of 179 members and is directed by a president and vice presidents. Its primary responsibilities are the enactment of the laws, the approval of the budget, the direction of the administrative apparatus, and the resolution of foreign policy questions.
