FOMA

FOMA
(Freedom Of Mobile Multimedia Access) A family of 3G cellphone services from NTT DoCoMo in Japan. Introduced in 2001, and falling under the UMTS 3G umbrella, FOMA was based on WCDMA but was incompatible with UMTS handsets until 2004. FOMA High Speed uses the HSDPA technology, which is significantly faster than WCDMA. See i-mode, HSPA and cellular generations.

NTT DoCoMo said the terminal will be marketed as FOMA A2502 HIGH-SPEED in Japan, available as soon as autumn 2007, for users requiring fast mobile packet transmissions via their PCs.
INTERNET BUSINESS NEWS-(C)1995-2006 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD A High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) service is to be introduced in Japan on 31 August 2006 by mobile operator NTT DoCoMo, coinciding with the release of the 3G FOMA N902iX HIGH-SPEED, the first HSDPA-compatible handset in Japan.
