FOMA

(Freedom Of Mobile Multimedia Access) A family of 3G cellphone services from NTT DoCoMo in Japan. Introduced in 2001, and falling under the UMTS 3G umbrella, FOMA was based on WCDMA but was incompatible with UMTS handsets until 2004. FOMA High Speed uses the HSDPA technology, which is significantly faster than WCDMA. See i-mode, HSPA and cellular generations.

NTT DoCoMo said the Home U consumer service for fixed-mobile convergence means DOCOMO FOMA handsets will be able to download large volume data, including video, while gaining from broadband speed and convenience.
