Fomin, Aleksandr Vasil’evich 

Born May 2 (14), 1869, in the village of Ermolevka, Petrovsk District, Saratov Province; died Oct. 16, 1935, in Kiev. Soviet botanist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1921).

Fomin graduated from Moscow University in 1893. In 1896 he became a graduate assistant at the University of Iur’ev (now Tartu), and in 1902 he became a botanist at the Tbilisi Botanical Gardens. From 1914 to 1927, Fomin was a professor at the University of Kiev. He served as director of the Kiev Botanical Gardens (from 1921), the Scientific Research Institute of Botany (from 1927), and the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (from 1931).

Fomin’s main works were devoted to the Pteropsida of the USSR (1931) and of the Caucasus (1913), the Ukraine (1926), Siberia (1930), and the Far East (1930). He also studied the flora of the Caucasus.
