Fomin, Igor’ Ivanovich 

Born Jan. 21 (Feb. 3), 1904, in Moscow. Soviet architect. People’s Architect of the USSR (1971). Son of I. A. Fomin.

In 1926, Fomin graduated from the Academy of Arts in Leningrad, where he had studied under A. I. Dmitriev and V. A. Shchuko. He taught in Leningrad at the Academy of Arts and at the I. E. Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture (from 1935; professor from 1946). Fomin designed the Moscow (1930–35) and Nevsky (1937–40) district soviet buildings, an apartment house on Karpovka Esplanade (1935), Shchemilovka district (including Ivanovskaia Street (1937–48) and an apartment house on Dvortsovaia Esplanade (1946–51), and the Pioshchad’ Vosstaniia subway station (1951–55) in Leningrad. He also designed an apartment house on Gagarin Street (1940–47) in Moscow and the branch of the A. A. Zhdanov Leningrad University in Petrodvorets (design, 1969). Fomin was awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
