Ford, James A. (Alfred) (1911–68) archaeologist; born in Water Valley, Miss. He was curator of North American archaeology at the American Museum of Natural History (1947–63). A specialist in prehistoric culture of the Americas, he did fieldwork in Alaska, the lower Mississippi Valley, and the Andes and he pioneered the seriation method of dating artifacts.
