Fort-Shevchenko
a city under oblast jurisdiction in Mangyshlak Oblast, Kazakh SSR. Fort Shevchenko is located on Cape Tiub-Karagan, on Mangyshlak Peninsula. A port on the Caspian Sea, the city has a fish-processing combine. Coquina is extracted in the area. Fort-Shevchenko was founded in 1846 as the fortification Novopetrovskoe. It was renamed Fort-Aleksandrovskii in 1857. In 1939 it was given its present name in honor of T. G. Shevchenko, who had been in exile there from 1850 to 1857.
