Fort Churchill State Historic Park Location: 8 miles south of Silver Springs on US 95A. Facilities: 20 campsites (no hookups), group area (camping or picnicking), picnic areas, trails, historic sites, visitor center, restrooms. Activities: Camping, fishing, swimming, hiking, canoeing, birdwatching, interpretive programs. Special Features: The US Army's Fort Churchill was built in 1860 to provide protection for early settlers but was abandoned nine years later. The ruins of the fort are preserved in a state of "arrested decay." Nearby is Buckland Station, which was a Pony Express stop. The Overland Telegraph also passed through this area at one time.
