Egmont Key State Park

Location: At the mouth of Tampa Bay, southwest of Fort DeSoto Beach; accessible only by private boat.
Facilities: Beach, nature trails, picnic tables.
Activities: Boating, fishing (in designated areas), swimming (in designated areas), hiking, wildlife viewing.
Special Features: Though it is primarily a wildlife refuge, Egmont Key has a working lighthouse that has stood since 1858. During the 19th Century, the island was a camp for captured Seminoles at the end of the Third Seminole War, and later it was occupied by the Navy during the Civil War. In 1898 Fort Dade was built there and remained active until 1923.
