Fort DuPont State Park Location: Along the Delaware River just south of Delaware City, off Route 9. Facilities: Picnic areas, trails, boat ramp, tennis courts, basketball courts, ball field, meeting facility, restrooms. Activities: Hiking, fishing, tennis, basketball, birdwatching, self-guided tours. Special Features: Named for Rear Admiral Samuel Francis duPont, the Fort was actively used as a military base from the Civil War through World War II. In this area also is the Port Penn Interpretive Center, which offers displays and programs that explain the folk life of the historic wetland communities along the shores of the Delaware. The Center also offers walking tours featuring the historic homes of Port Penn as well as the marshlands that surround the town of Delaware City.
