Fort Frederick State Park Location: In Washington County, 18 miles west of Hagerstown off I-70 via MD 56. Facilities: 29 unimproved campsites (é), youth group camping area, camp store (é), picnic area and shelters (é), playground, hiking trail, boat launch, boat rental, concessions, visitor center (é), historic fort and related displays. Activities: Camping, boating, flatwater canoeing, freshwater fishing, hiking, cross-country skiing, living history programs. Special Features: Fort Frederick was erected in 1756, during the French and Indian War, and is considered the best preserved pre-Revolutionary stone fort in the country. The fort's stone wall and two barracks have been restored to their 1758 appearance. Military reenactments are held annually. The 23-mile Western Maryland Rail Trail begins one-half mile west of the park.
