Fort Jesup State Historic Site Location: In Sabine Parish, 6 miles east of Many on LA 6. Facilities: Historic buildings, picnic area, visitor's center with exhibits, restrooms, and gift shop. Activities: Guided tours, interpretive programs. Special Features: Colonel Zachary Taylor established and commanded the garrison at Fort Jesup, which was built as a border outpost in 1822. Taylor's troops established law and order in the area, and Fort Jesup remained an important military post for nearly 25 years. The original kitchen/mess hall is the only historic structure remaining from the large reservation that once spread across the frontier. The reconstructed officers' quarters building now houses the site's visitor center.
