Fort Kearny State Recreation Area Location: 1 mile east and 1 mile north of the Fort Kearney State Historical Park. Facilities: 110 campsites (75 with electrical hookups), modern restrooms, showers, picnic areas, 3 picnic shelters (1 with electricity), trails (5 miles), swimming beach, fishing pier (é), river access. Activities: Camping, boating (non-power), fishing, swimming, hiking, mountain biking. Special Features: In spring, the recreation area is a popular destination for bird watchers who come to see the world's largest concentration of sandhill cranes, as the cranes and other migratory waterfowl congregate in the central Platte River Valley. The camping area is shaded by stately cottonwood trees, some of which are more than 100 years old. Eight sandpit lakes are available for fishing, and the Fort Kearney State Historical Park is located nearby.
