Fort Knox State Historic Site Location: On Route 174, just off US 1, west of the Waldo-Hancock Bridge. Facilities: Historic fort, interpretive center, picnic facilities. Open May 1-October 31. Activities: Guided tours in summer. Special Features: Fort Knox is New England's finest unmodified specimen of military architecture and features master granite craftsmanship. Maine's largest historic fort as well as the state's first granite fort, it was constructed between 1844 and 1864 but was never fully completed. The fort was strategically located on the narrows of the Penobscot River to protect the river valley from naval attack and was manned during the Civil and Spanish-American Wars but never saw combat.
