Established: Authorized on August 31, 1964; established on October 14, 1966. Location: 6 miles west of the city of Larned, Kansas, on KS 156. Facilities: Picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required. Activities: Fishing, guided tours, interpretive programs. Special Features: This military outpost was established midway along the Santa Fe Trail in 1859 to protect the mail and travelers. The fort served as a bureau for the Indian Agency during much of the 1860s and was a key military base of operations during the Indian War of 1868-1869. The fort was deactivated in 1878 and sold at public auction in 1884. The stone buildings are among the best preserved vestiges of the Indian Wars era. See other parks in Kansas.
