Fort Necessity National Battlefield Address: 1 Washington Pkwy Farmington, PA 15437 Phone: 724-329-5512; Fax: 724-329-8682; Web: www.nps.gov/fone/ Size: 903 acres. Established: Established as national battlefield site on March 4, 1931; redesignated on August 10, 1961. Location: 11 miles east of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, on US 40. Facilities: Group campsites, picnic area (é), rest rooms (é), visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required. Activities: Hiking, cross-country skiing, interpretive programs. Special Features: Colonial troops commanded by Colonel George Washington, then 22 years old, were defeated here in the opening battle of the French and Indian War on July 3, 1754. The park includes the nearby monument to Major General Edward Braddock and the early 19th-century Mount Washington Tavern and Jumonville Glen, site of the first skirmishing of the French and Indian War, May 28, 1754.
