The post was abandoned in 1853 and reactivated during the Civil War as a supply and training center. The restored and reconstructed buildings preserve the U.S. frontier of the 1840s and 1850s. Today the site consists of 20 historic structures, a parade ground and five acres of restored tallgrass prairie.
