On the central western border of IN, north of Terre Haute, established Dec 20, 1825 from Montgomery County. Name Origin: For Maj. James Fountain (originally Fontaine) (?-1790), KY army officer killed near Ft. Wayne in the Battle of Maumee.

Area (sq mi): 397.92 (land 395.69; water 2.23). Pop per sq mi: 44.10.
Pop 2005: 17,462. State rank: 77. Pop change: 2000-20005 -2.70%; 1990-2000 0.80%. Pop 2000: 17,954 (White 98.00%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 1.10%; Asian 0.20%; Other 1.00%). Foreign born: 1.00%. Median age: 37.70.
