Francisco de Orellana

Orellana, Francisco de 

Born 1505 or 1511 in Trujillo, Spain; died 1546 or 1550 in Brazil. Spanish conquistador.

In 1537, Orellana reestablished Fort Guayaquil, which had been destroyed by the Indians. In 1541 he left Guayaquil and crossed the Andes. He traveled along the Napo River and then down the Amazon, which crossed the “land of the Amazons”; he reached the Atlantic Ocean in August 1542. Orellana traversed South America at its widest part and traced the entire middle and lower Amazon.

Recent decades have seen an indigenous renaissance after the four centuries of decline that followed the first European incursion into the region in 1542, when Francisco de Orellana and a few dozen conquistadores floated the length of the Amazon River.
By BelE[umlaut]n Fern[sz]ndez - Puerto Francisco de Orellana, Ecuador In the run-up to the Ecuadorian elections of April 26, 2009, Guadalupe Llori - the Pachakutik movement candidate for prefect of Orellana province in the eastern Amazonian region - promised the Quechua community of Pako Rumi a paved road.
Some maintain that the number has actually tripled in the last three years due to the growing demand for this kind of meat in the cities of Puerto Francisco de Orellana (Coca), El Tena, La Joya de los Sachas, and Lago Agrio.
