Franconia Notch State Park Location: On I-93 (Franconia Notch Parkway), in the heart of the White Mountain National Forest (see separate entry in national forests chapter). Facilities: 7 RV campsites with hookups (at Cannon RV Park), 97 wooded tent sites, showers, camp store, picnic areas, food service, trails, beach, bathhouse, boat launch, museum, historic site, visitor center, gift shop, aerial tramway, restrooms. Activities: Camping, boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, bicycling, mountain biking, rock climbing, winter sports, interpretive programs (seasonal). Special Features: Over time, fluvial and glacial erosive forces have formed spectacular scenery and natural geologic formations at this site. Park was home to New Hampshire's famous Old Man of the Mountain, a granite outcropping that looked like a profile of a man. Sadly, the formation collapsed May 3, 2003. Attractions at Franconia Notch include Flume Gorge, New England Ski Museum, and an aerial tramway to the summit of 4,180-foot Cannon Mountain. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail passes through the park (see separate entry in national trails section).
