Bad Frankenhausen

a city in the German Democratic Republic, in the Halle District, at the southern foot of the Kyffhâuser Range. Population, 8,100 (1964). It is a balneological health resort located near saltwater springs.

During the Peasant War of 1524–26, Bad Frankenhausen was one of the key strongholds of the revolutionary forces in Thuringia. On May 14 and 15, 1525, a decisive battle took place near the city between the revolutionary army led by T. Münzer and the united princely armies, led by Landgrave Philip of Hesse. The battle ended in the insurgents’ defeat and the capture of Münzer.
