Frasch, Herman (1851–1914) chemist, engineer; born in Gaildorf, Germany. Emigrating to America in 1868, he discovered a new way of refining paraffin in 1876. Between 1885–94 he developed a desulfurization process for petroleum. He made other important discoveries, notably a method for mining sulfur directly by injecting superheated water into the mine. His own Union Sulfur Company led the U.S.A. to become a major exporter of sulfur. How to thank TFD for its existence?
