Frederiks, Georgii Nikolaevich
Born Apr. 3 (15), 1889; died Mar. 1, 1939. Soviet geologist and paleontologist. Frederiks graduated from the University of Kazan in 1911 and received a master’s degree in geology and minerology in 1917. From 1913 to 1931 he worked on the Geological Committee, during which time he also taught at the University of Perm’ (1920–21). From 1931 to 1935 he worked at the Leningrad Mining Institute, and from 1935 to 1937, at the Geological Museum in Ukhta. His principal works dealt with the study of the brachiopods, ammonites, stratigraphy, and geology of the Carboniferous and Permian periods of the Urals. Frederiks was an advocate of the three-part division of the Permian System [seePERMIAN SYSTEM (PERIOD)]. Several fossil organisms have been named after him. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
