Freiburg (im Breisgau)

City (pop., 2002 est.: 208,294), southwestern Germany. It is situated on the western slopes of the Black Forest. Chartered in 1120, Freiburg passed to the counts of Urach (later Freiburg) in 1218. It was ruled by the Habsburgs from 1368 to 1806, when it passed to Baden. The city was heavily bombed by the Allies during World War II. Since rebuilt, it is now the cultural and economic centre of the Black Forest region. Freiburg is the seat of the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg (founded 1457).
