Freiman, Imant Georgievich

Born Apr. 19 (May 1), 1890, at Islice Station, in what is now Bauska Raion, Latvian SSR; died Feb. 8, 1929, in Leningrad. Soviet specialist in radio engineering.

In 1913, Freiman graduated from the St. Petersburg Electrical Engineering Institute. He joined the institute’s teaching staff in 1916 and was made a professor in 1921. Beginning in 1922, he also taught at the Leningrad Naval Academy. From 1911 to 1917 he helped construct several spark-transmitter radio stations in Russia. Freiman contributed to the establishment of the Soviet radio industry and served as a scientific consultant to the Central Radio Laboratory.

Freiman’s principal works are on antenna assemblies and radio-wave propagation. For many years, his Course in Radio Engineering (1924; 2nd ed., 1928) was a basic textbook for Soviet radio specialists.
