In central CO, southwest of Colorado Springs; original county, organized Nov 1, 1861 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For John Charles Fremont (1813-90), soldier and explorer who led five expeditions to the West, U.S. senator from CA (1850-51), and governor of the AZ Territory (1878-81).
