French, John Denton Pinkstone 

Born Sept. 28, 1852, in Ripple, Kent; died May 22, 1925, at Deal Castle, Kent. British field marshal (1913). Earl of Ypres (1922).

French joined the navy in 1866 and transferred to the cavalry in 1874. He fought in the Boer War (1899–1902) as commander of a cavalry division. From 1907 to 1912 he was inspector general of the army. From 1912 to April 1914 he was chief of the Imperial General Staff. During World War I, French commanded the British Expeditionary Force in France from August 1914 through December 1915. Because of differences with the war minister, H. H. Kitchener, French was recalled and appointed commander of the troops in the United Kingdom. From 1918 to 1921 he was lord lieutenant of Ireland. French published 1914, his memoir of the war.
