Friedlaender, Israel (1876–1920) scholar; born in Kovel, Ukraine. He came to New York in 1930 to teach biblical literature and exegesis at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. A specialist on the relation between Islam and Judaism, he was murdered in the Ukraine while serving as commissioner for the Joint Distribution Commission of America.
