Friedrich August Brauell

Brauell, Friedrich August 

Born 1807 in Weimar; died 1882. Professor and doctor of medicine.

Brauell completed his university studies in Erlangen and then graduated from veterinary school in Berlin. In 1834 he moved to Russia and entered the Russian service, where in 1837 he was a teacher in the veterinary section of the Vilnius Medical and Surgical Academy. In 1841 he taught in the subdepartment of veterinary medicine at the University of Kazan and later became a professor at the Derpt (Tartu) Veterinary School. Independently of other researchers, he discovered the pathogenic agent of anthrax in human blood and focused attention on the causal role of microbes in the origin of the disease. He proved experimentally the susceptibility of various species of animals to this disease. He returned to Germany in 1868.
