Friedrich Wilhelm von Bülow

Bülow, Friedrich Wilhelm von 

Born Feb. 16, 1755, in Falkenberg; died Feb. 25, 1816, in Königsberg. Prussian general of the infantry (1814); became count von Dennewitz (1814).

Bülow joined the Prussian Army in 1768. He participated in wars against France in 1792-95 and 1806-07. In 1812, Bülow replaced L. Yorck as governor of East and West Prussia, where he formed the reserve corps with whom he participated in the campaign of 1813 in the Berlin region. Subsequently, Bülow was on the staff of Bernadotte’s Northern Army at Leipzig, when the French were being driven out of the Netherlands and Belgium, and at a battle at Laon. In 1815 he commanded the IV Corps, whose attack at Waterloo helped bring about the defeat of Napoleon’s army.
