Born Oct. 26, 1849, in Berlin; died Aug. 3, 1917, in Charlottenburg. German mathematician. Member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin (1893).

Frobenius received his doctorate from the University of Berlin. He became an assistant professor at the university in 1874 and in the following year was appointed a professor at the Eidgenössische Polytechnikum in Zürich. In 1892 he returned to the University of Berlin as a professor. Frobenius’ principal works deal with algebra and the theory of algebraic numbers, particularly matrix theory and the theory of finite groups and their matrix representations.
