In west-central GA; organized Dec 20, 1853 from De Kalb County; on Jan 1, 1932 annexed Campbell County (organized 1828 from Carroll, Coweta, De Kalb, Fayette, and Cherokee counties) and Milton County (organized 1857 from Cobb, Cherokee, and Forsyth counties). Name Origin: For Robert Fulton (1765-1815), builder of the Clermont, the first commercially successful steamboat. Some believe for Hamilton Fulton, the English engineer who surveyed a railroad through the present county.
