a group of basilidial fungi that cause the wood in buildings to rot. There are about 50 varieties.

True and white timber-destroying fungi destroy wood faster than other species. Less damage is caused by the small, regular coriolellus, scaly, and pit varieties. Most other species of timber-destroying fungi are much less harmful. They can be recognized by external appearance and by microscopic features of the mycellium and the seed bodies. Their development is promoted chiefly by dampness in timber.
