Gómez de Avellaneda, Gertrudis (hĕrtr
`thēs gō`mĕth dā ävĕlyänā`thä), 1814–73, Spanish poet, b. Cuba. She went to Spain in 1836. Her passionate and poignant verses reflecting an unhappy love affair won her a high place among Spanish romantic poets. She also wrote problem novels, such as the antislavery El Mulato Sab (1841), and dramas on historical and religious subjects, including Alfonso Munio (1844), Saúl (1849), and Baltasar (1858).Gómez de Avellaneda, Gertrudis Born Mar. 23. 1814. in Puerto Príncipe. Cuba; died Feb. 1, 1873, in Madrid. Spanish and Cuban writer. Gómez de Avellaneda began to publish in 1836 while living in Spain. In 1840 her first dramatic production, Leoncia, was performed. In 1841 she published a collection, Poems, and an antislavery novel. Sab. She was the author of the tragedies Munio Alfonso (1844) and Baltasar (1858), a historical novel about the conquest of Mexico Guatimozín (1846), and other works. After her return to Cuba in 1859 she published the journal Album Cubano. In 1864 she returned to Spain. WORKSObras, vols. 1–4.
