Gaborone (gäbərō`nē), city (1992 est. pop. 140,000), capital of Botswana. It is located on the country's major railroad line and has a small international airport. The city is the country's administrative center. Nearby manganese and asbestos mines have led to increased industrial expansion. The city was founded c.1890 by Gaborone Matlapin, an African chief. In 1965 it replaced Mafikeng Mafikeng or Mafeking , town, North West prov., N central South Africa, near the border of Botswana. It is the twin town of the much larger Mmabatho, capital of North West prov.

It is located in southeastern Botswana near the border with South Africa. The seat of government was transferred there from Mafikeng, S.Af., in 1965, one year before Botswana became independent of Britain. Gaborone is on the Cape-Zimbabwe railway and is the site of government offices, parliament buildings, health facilities, a thermal power station, and an airport.
