Gabrichevskii, Georgii Norbertovich
Born Feb. 11 (23), 1860, in Moscow; died there Mar. 23 (Apr. 5), 1907. Russian microbiologist, epidemiologist, and public figure. Gabrichevskii graduated from the department of medicine at Moscow University in 1884 and from 1889 to 1891 worked in the laboratories of E. Metchnikoff, R. Koch, P. P. E. Roux, and P. Ehrlich. In 1891 he established a bacteriological laboratory in the therapeutics clinic of Moscow University. There for the first time in Russia he began to lecture on bacteriology. He founded the first Russian bacteriological society. In 1895, Gabrichevskii organized the Bacteriological Institute at Moscow University and headed it until his death. His major works are devoted to the study of diphtheria, scarlet fever, and relapsing fever. With N. F. Filatov he introduced the serotherapy of diphtheria for the first time in Russia.
