Gabrilovich, Evgenii Iosifovich 

Born Sept. 17 (29), 1899, in Voronezh. Soviet Russian writer and writer of screenplays.

Gabrilovich published his first novella in 1921. He made his film debut in 1937 with the scenario for the film The Last Night. Characteristic of his art are a concern with profound psychological analysis of a character’s makeup and a particular interest in the portrayal of human destiny against a back-ground of critical historical events. His major works are the scenarios of the films Mashen’ka (1942), Daydream (1943), Two Fighters (1943), Murder on Dante Street (1956), The Communist (1958), and The Last Autumn, one of the stories in the film stories About Lenin (1958). Gabrilovich also wrote the scenarios for Lenin in Poland (1965), Your Contemporary(1968), You Can’t Wade Through Fire (1968), and The Beginning (1970, with G. Panfilov). Gabrilovich has written theoretical articles on the art of making films, primarily on the writing of screenplays. He is the author of the screenplays of the films The Gadfly (1955, based on E. Voinich’s novel) and Resurrection (1960-62, based on L. N. Tolstoy’s novel). Gabrilovich began teaching at the Ail-Union State Institute of Cinematography in 1948, and he became a professor there in 1962. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1943 and again in 1967. Gabrilovich was also awarded the Order of Lenin, three other orders, and medals.
